LAUSD’s family and relatives are on high alert for a possible three-day strike that is expected to begin on Tuesday.

The union representing workers, including janitors, cafeteria workers, paraprofessionals and other support staff, voted in favor of a work stoppage this week, while LAUSD teachers also voted announced that they would join the strike in support of their colleagues, which means that the campuses will close.

LAUSD has told parents to plan and prepare for a possible strike that will close hundreds of schools Tuesday through Thursday.

Before this decision, there were demonstrations and rallies in favor of this in front of the headquarters.

Saturday’s rally brought together supporters of the upcoming strike, including the teachers’ union UTLA, in solidarity with SEIU to demand better working conditions.

The average salary for LAUSD school workers is $25,000 per year.

Here is what SEIU Local 99 is asking for:

  • an increase of at least 30% in wages;
  • that staffing shortages are filled;
  • increased hours and health care benefits for part-time workers;
  • Sanitation and maintenance improvements on campus

Here’s what UTLA Steering Committee Member and Chapter President Ingrid Villeda told our sister network NBCLA about why it’s important to send this message of solidarity.

“For us, SEIU Local 99 finalizing a fair contract means our students will be able to see their parents live a better life. If their parents make a little more money, our students will benefit, everyone could pay their bills, no one would have to work three jobs,” Villeda said.

Thousands of LAUSD workers are in downtown Los Angeles demanding better wages.

Together, the SEIU and UTLA unions represent more than 60,000 LAUSD workers.

It is possible that if they reach an agreement, the strike will be called off, but for now it is still scheduled for Tuesday.
