“He’s a hero.” These were the words of Fernando Alonso in regards to Spear Walk, who finished sixth at the Bahrain Grand Prix despite having had surgery days before after suffering a cycling accident.
Now Lance has shown on his social media how his recovery has been. A recovery that only lasted a few days, operated recently and with the nails still in his wrists.
“Today I want to take a moment to reflect on the last two weeks and share my story with all of you…”, begins his message from the Canadian pilot, who has received much praise for the achievement he has accomplished.
After the accident, all the alarms went off: “Scanners showed he had a right wrist fracture and displacementa fracture of the left wrist, a partial fracture of the left hand and finally another fracture of the big toe of the right foot”.
His team were convinced that he would not be able to qualify for the start of the season. But it came. “My medical team made sure we did everything that would show any evidence of bone healing. It became my full-time job, trying to combine everything that could help me, even if it was 0.5%,” says Alonso’s partner.
He regained mobility and strength in record time: “The rehabilitation took hard work and perseverance, but with an incredible medical team and the support of my friends and family, I was able to get over the pain and get back on track in Bahrain with my team and fellow pilots”.
And he got it. He arrived in Bahrain, took part in the tests and had to be helped by his mechanics to get out of the car, and finished sixth in the race: “I am grateful to everyone who has supported me, sent kind messages and well wishes.”
