A family mourns the tragic and unexpected death of a 17-year-old boy who was stabbed to death outside the King Torta restaurant in El Sereno as he left school and was waiting for his parents.
The incident happened last Friday before 4 p.m. when Xavier Daniel Chavarín was stabbed in the back, as he was leaving school, and following the usual path, waiting at the King Torta company for his mother, his stepfather and his sisters.
Chavarin was pronounced dead at the scene at 4500 Valley Boulevard on March 3.
“The fact that they took him away from me breaks my heart,” said his mother Laura Frías.
The Wilson High School student was waiting outside King Torta for his family to pick him up when he was stabbed.
“I always wait for him up there when I’m a little late, and he always tells me: ‘Mom, I’ll wait for you here at King Torta’, that day he came walking and he stopped there to wait for me, but when I came with my husband they had already killed him,” said Laura Frías, the victim’s mother.
This afternoon his family is suffering unbearably and they have come together to remember him.
A tile mural was unveiled in the town of El Sereno on Friday.
“(Xavier was) calm, he wasn’t going anywhere from school, from home and his grades were great, he was going to graduate with honors in July,” his grandfather said.
Additionally, LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho made an appearance to show his solidarity.
“We are asking for help from the community because someone knows something about this incident,” Carvalho said.
The Los Angeles Police Department describes the suspect as a Hispanic male, but so far authorities have not found a motive for the incident and investigations are ongoing, as another shot knife was reported on the same street on Friday, reported at 8:52 p.m.
Authorities have not confirmed whether this is a case of gang violence or whether the suspect is homeless.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the case to call the police.
