Schools in Doral are ready to resume normal operations after several activities were canceled due to smoke from a fire that has been burning at a Miami-Dade County recycling plant for more than a week, officials said. authorities.

Starting Tuesday, all area schools will resume normal operations, including outdoor activities, Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials announced Monday. However, there will be no outdoor activities after sunset.

On Friday, parents of Ronald Reagan/Doral High School students were encouraged to pick up their children from school early.

That same day, as a precaution and following EPA recommendations, Doral Glades Park and Doral Legacy Park were closed.

Earlier in the week, a report from the Environmental Protection Agency said the air quality in the area was unhealthy.

In a statement on Sunday, Miami-Dade officials said smoke levels continued to decline but still advised residents to stay indoors, especially in the evenings and nights.

People with pre-existing respiratory and heart conditions, as well as the elderly, young children and pregnant women, have been urged to take extra precautions, such as wearing a mask if they must be outdoors.

Last week, firefighters began demolishing one of the buildings to better reach the fire.
