The fight against crime was the main objective of a conference involving several law enforcement agencies. And in it, statistics regarding the level of crime for both Miami Dade County and the City of Miami stood out.

We are far better off than other major cities across the country, according to what the district attorney’s office and Miami police said today and thanks to decades of working together.

This is the first conference titled Fighters Against Crime, an effort between various law enforcement agencies and the National Justice Assistance Office and Public Safety Collaborative which for three years provided resources to Miami police to enhance security in the city.

After benefiting from these funds, the Miami police chief explained that his department is now committed to sharing with other agencies the security practices and strategies that were implemented from 2018 to 2021.

Manuel Morales assures that “we have cameras in the city, electronic systems that detect discharges of firearms, where we put the cameras that read car license plates”.

And he says it worked. Compared to the first two months of last year, in 2023, the city of Miami sees a 33% reduction in homicides. Shootings have decreased by 61%. And thefts are down 25%.

It’s a team effort, according to state attorney Kathy Fernández Rundle, who says crime in the county has dropped 65% since 1993 after implementing a strategy called smart justice.

And in reference to a drop in crime, authorities took into account several factors, such as the fact that Miami is a diverse city, with nearly half a million inhabitants, with a lot of tourism. And that the number of residents over the past year has increased.
