NEW YORK – A global study of type 2 diabetes has come to a compelling conclusion: 70% of all new cases each year could be linked to dietary habits, with three in particular playing the biggest role in the development of the disease metabolic.

The study, published Monday in Nature Medicine, analyzed 28 years of data from 184 countries, aiming to link 11 different dietary factors to the development of type 2 diabetes.

The study authors found that about 70% of all new cases of type 2 diabetes per year, or about 14 million cases worldwide, could be linked to dietary factors.

However, three in particular stood out as having the strongest correlation with new cases:

  • insufficient consumption of whole grains
  • excessive consumption of refined rice and wheat
  • excessive consumption of processed meat

More broadly, the authors separated dietary factors into six “excessive intake” categories and five “insufficient intake” groups, with excessive intake factors playing a much larger role (about 61% of cases) than dietary intake factors. insufficient.

In other words, eating too much of the “bad stuff” was a bigger problem than not eating enough of the “good stuff”.
