NEW YORK — Authorities are investigating a grisly discovery in vast woods on Staten Island: a possible hand discovered by a man who was walking a dog in the area a day ago, New York police confirmed Friday.

Police say the dog walker found the potential member in the North Mount Loretto State Forest near Amboy and Cunningham Roads around 2:40 p.m. Thursday and called 911.

Officers responded to the 200-acre lot on the South Shore, as did the medical examiner’s office.

No additional items believed to be human remains were recovered Friday morning, according to the latest information from the NYPD, although cadaverous dogs were seen roaming the woods for hours.

The yellow caution tape appeared to mark off large sections of trees. Our sister network NBC 4’s helicopter showed a strong investigative presence at the scene.

No other details were immediately available.
