We took a look at the new 2023 Game Publisher Rankings on Metacritic today, trying to figure out where Xbox Game Studios landed on the list of 45 different publishers, and then we realized… Xbox isn’t there. .
The reason? Well, these rankings are actually based on all 2022 releases, and since Xbox Game Studios didn’t release enough games last year, the publisher “just couldn’t rate.” Here’s what Metacritic had to say about it:
“Sony had no problem taking the top spot in our rankings this year, and not just because Microsoft failed to qualify (releasing four different titles with unusually low scores, one title falling short of our five-game limit).”

Now, to be fair to Microsoft, the company was ranked #1 on this list last time around, and 2023 already looks like a much better year than 2022 for new releases from Xbox Game Studios (including Bethesda), so I hopefully this list will be considerably different later in the year.
For now, though, Metacritic’s new roundup is a pretty stark reminder that 2022 certainly wasn’t the most successful time in Xbox Game Studios’ history, though we’ve still been treated to some gems. as as dusk falls, penance and the full publication of Based. Fingers crossed for a busier 2023!
