While exploring the shores of the Valheim biome, you might have found a fish or two stranded in a lake or by the ocean. On the contrary, maybe you swam across the big river and encountered several fish along the way. However, you may have encountered a weird bug that prevents you from picking up fish you come into contact with in Valheim. Even though the fish’s name appears in the in-game crosshairs, you cannot add it to your inventory, no matter how many times you spam its “Collect” entry.

Collect Fish Bugs in Valheim

With the fishing rod tool and mechanics in place, it’s not hard to see why the development team wouldn’t want adventurers to skip fishing and easily catch any fish they encounter. After searching the official Valheim Discord channel and the patch notes on the game’s website, we couldn’t find the exact point where this “known bug” was fixed. On the contrary, there were several “Misc. fixes” for mechanics related to fish.
To test this bug out for ourselves, we visited a small, remote island off the coast of the Black Forest in Valheim and tried to collect stranded fish that washed up on land. Some went through the ground, but we managed to approach several Perch and can confirm that we were unable to pick them up despite the proximity. So if you want to collect fish in Valheim without dealing with this known bug, you should resort to gearing up your fishing rod instead of trying to catch fish with your bare hands.
