The Last of Us is known for its extremely compelling and deep characters. Throughout Ellie and Joel’s journey to find the Fireflies, they encounter many people who help or hinder them. While this world is dark and grim, no one in the game proves how despicable people can be in the apocalypse more than David. This man may speak softly, but the evil in him is powerful. Here’s everything you need to know about David in The Last of Us.

Who is David in The Last of Us?

David is played by actor Scott Shepherd. It has been seen in movies like Jason Bourne, Side Effects and Bridge of Spies. The actor does a phenomenal job playing David, who was originally played in the game by Nolan North, best known as the voice actor for Nathan Drake from Naughty Dog’s Uncharted series.

Ellie meets David during the winter in Colorado while Joel recovers from his injury sustained at the University of Colorado. She chases a deer and manages to kill it, but is forced to chase it until she finally gives up. This is where she meets David and his footman, James.

Their time together initially leads us to believe that David is a nice guy who just wants to know more about Ellie. However, things quickly go awry when he reveals that his team is on the hunt for a man and girl who murdered one of their own in college. In the show, David is further deepened by being portrayed as a preacher who believes himself to be a divine protector of his flock.

David first lets Ellie go to lead them to Joel, but she flees on horseback. However, David begins to reveal how vile he is after capturing Ellie. He and his community are well known to thrive on cannibalism, though David is reluctant to turn Ellie into food because he has a loathsome interest in her. When Ellie shuts it down and breaks her finger in the process, she quickly begins to realize that she can’t stop her crew from getting revenge for long.

Does David die in The Last of Us?

After the decision to kill Ellie is made, David and James hold her down on a table, but Ellie manages to escape revealing that she is infected. This causes them to hesitate, giving Ellie a chance to kill James and bite David in the fight before fleeing.

David pursues Ellie, eventually cornering her in the cabin above. A wicked game of hide and seek ensues, with David eventually finding Ellie and attempting to rape her. Ellie, however, manages to grab a fallen machete and kills David before Joel finally manages to find her. Visibly shaken, Joel comforts her and the two finally continue their journey to Salt Lake City. It’s a horrifying and prolonged moment for Ellie, and one of The Last of Us’ darkest moments.
