Character stats like health, attack, or defense are easy to grasp in Genshin Impact, but newcomers might need some help understanding what Elemental Mastery is. During the first hours of the trip to Mondstadt, new travelers learn about the various elements of Teyvat, such as Amber’s Pyro, Kaeya’s Cryo, and Lisa’s Electro. At a glance, it’s not hard to assume that Elemental Mastery is the attribute that increases the damage of a character’s elemental abilities. While such an assumption is not entirely wrong, this statistic is not.

How does Elemental Mastery work in Genshin Impact?

In a nutshell, Elemental Mastery in Genshin Impact primarily determines the damage dealt by Elemental Reactions, the combat mechanic that amplifies damage dealt to enemies when activated. In other words, Elemental Mastery does not affect the direct damage of an elemental ability or burst, but increases the damage dealt when another element reacts to the ability’s element. For example, let’s say you performed Qiqi’s Elemental Blast on a group of Hilichurls. The damage dealt is decent, but nothing spectacular. Then you follow the last of Qiqi with the Pyronado of Xiangling. The damage caused by the Elemental Fusion Reaction caused by Xiangling can be improved if she has a higher Elemental Mastery.

Generally speaking, you need to provide high elemental mastery to those you trust to trigger elemental reactions in Genshin Impact. We’ve given our Anemo Kazuha and Hydro Kokomi a significantly higher Elemental Mastery than the rest of our party, as we want them to boost our damage using Melt or Vaporize when possible. Of course, which character you max out this stat for will depend on your preference. Anyway, remember that units that rely heavily on combining their abilities with elemental reactions will usually offer higher damage when they have more elemental mastery in Genshin Impact.
