In April 2022, then-Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak ordered the Royal Mint to create a state-backed NFT for Britain to show the government’s commitment to the future . However, almost a year after these plans were first announced and following a promotion for Rishi Sunak, there appear to be no current plans for an NFT for Britain.

This was confirmed by Economy Secretary Andrew Griffith, who said that while the Royal Mint did not pursue the NFT plan, the idea would be kept under review, meaning it did not not yet been fully abandoned.

No specific reason was given for dropping the NFT plan, but as Rishi Sunak remains a strong supporter of crypto and blockchain technology, we could see a return of this NFT For Britain concept soon enough.
