Like I said, he’s a magician. You can eventually learn all of the following skills. Note that the Wisdom of Alephan will only unlock after learning the other seven. Also, prioritize getting Fireball, Freezing Wind, and Lightning. Since a Scholar’s only access to weapons is a staff, you’ll rely on these magical abilities to discover enemies’ weaknesses.
- Fireball: 14 SP for fire damage to all enemies.
- Freezing Wind: 14 SP ice damage to all enemies.
- Lightning Bolt: 14 SP lightning damage to all enemies.
- Analysis: 1 SP to reveal a random week point for an enemy.
- Stroke of genius: 5SP to get two random buffs.
- Elemental Flurry: 10SP to deal 3-5 random hits of Fire, Ice, or Lightning damage to enemies.
- Advanced Magic: 15 SP to double the power of an ally’s magic attacks.
- Wisdom of Alephan: 30 SP to triple an ally’s magic attacks.
His unique talent means that the moment he enters a battle, he will identify a weakness for each enemy. It’s ongoing, so while it’s there, you can learn all of these abilities without needing to analyze. I would honestly say it can slow down the learning of Analyze as a result.
The best academic skills to make sure Osvald knows ASAP are Fireball, Ice Wind, Lightning Strike, Elemental Barrage, and Temper Strike. This should also mean you’ll get the academic support skills you need the most, which is Elemental Augment. You need academic skills for this. When equipped, increases elemental attack power by 50.
His “Latent Power” limit attack allows him to deal heavy magic damage to a single enemy with one of his elemental spells that normally hit everyone.

Osvald can scout by day and raid by night. Examine is the one that is useful. It’s a great way to get information from people. It’s based on percentages, so it doesn’t have the same limitation as Castti’s survey that requires him to be at a certain level to request information. If you’re new to a town, bring in Osvald to (hopefully) get some info on just about everyone. Whenever it was above 50% I noticed that it almost always succeeded.
Cutting is the way to get items from NPCs at night. However, I would say avoid. Osvald’s magic can be expensive, and the fact that he’s a Scholar really limits his ability to take advantage of weapon weaknesses unless he has the right job. Best to leave Throne Steal or Partitio Purchase to get what you want.
What side jobs are good for Osvald in octopathic traveler 2
Conviértelo en clerigo or apothecary.
Yeah, with a cleric you don’t get extra weapons to take advantage of that weakness. But for this build, you make him the team mage. You probably don’t need Temenos at this point unless you really need to guide or coerce someone. (But Hikari’s Bribe is better at gathering intel at night anyway, and you can always have Ochette, Agnea, or Partitio nearby for an NPC to escort you.)
With the apothecary option, you get healing and support skills like Healing Touch, Rehabilitate, and Replenish Health. However, you also gain the ability to use an ax as an additional weapon, which helps you reach your range.
