At least it’s tastier than being bitten by a spider.
What makes it feel like a Spider-Man game is its incredible sense of momentum. As you rush through Insomniac’s colorful metropolis, Sunset City, and hit the ground, you’ll be back in no time. Sure, Sunset Overdrive will have you trading web-slinging for rail-grinding, but it’s her wonderful physics that make her thrilling parkour stand out. No wonder Insomniac’s creative director credited the game with laying the groundwork for our friendly neighborhood web-slinger.
Where Spidey gradually builds up his silky abilities without firing a single shot, Sunset Overdrive gives you a ridiculous arsenal to wreak havoc with. Shooting an explosive teddy bear at a horde of mutants never gets old. Maybe a little happier than he should be.
batman: arkham town
If you’re looking for games like Spider-Man, the Batman Arkham series should be your first stop. Batman: Arkham Asylum kicked off the trilogy and made superhero games great again in 2009, but it’s the sequel that’s most reminiscent of Peter Parker’s new game.
That’s because Arkham City takes place in an open world, uh, city, rather than the more confined but extraordinarily detailed asylum for insane criminals. You can have fun gliding around him, using the grappling hook to regain lost height, then pounce on unsuspecting criminals from above. The main draw in Marvel’s Spider-Man is how you move. The same goes for Prototype. Instead of Peter Parker, you play as Alex Mercer, a decidedly grumpy man who wakes up with no memory of how he gained his powerful shape-shifting abilities. From combat to movement, Mercer boasts a move list as extensive as Spider-Man’s, as he vertically climbs and descends skyscrapers with equally reckless abandon.
Prototype even shares Spider-Man’s New York playground, so if you squint while playing this 2009 version, you can even pretend it’s the same game. Almost. One feature that marks Prototype as distinctly different is Mercer’s massive arm blades with which he can put enemies into the kibosh. Don’t expect a protagonist as light-hearted as Pete either: Mercer is more of an anti-hero, so much so, in fact, that he’s the big bad of Prototype 2. The Prototype could serve as a blueprint for a future Marvel’s Venom. game. Here is hope.
just cause 3
In Just Cause 3, Rico Rodriguez returns to what he does best: dispatch bad guys with a huge bag of tools while flying effortlessly through the air. Sound familiar? The setting of the fictional Medici Island is a remarkably different setting for traversing the concrete jungle of New York, but sporting Rico’s wingsuit and grappling hook is just as captivating as Marvel’s Spider-Man.

It may not be as flexible or fluid as Insomniac’s traversal system, but it’s still a useful way to scale London’s landmarks and tour this large, dense turn-of-the-century city.
