It’s Destiny 2 Eclipse review time, and unfortunately, I’m picking up more negatives than positives. While it benefited from a marketing campaign with great fanfare, it does not live up to it. This is certainly the extension that I liked the least, unlike its older sister The Queen of Witches. In efecto, the incoherent story and the writing around certain characters leave me perplexed. But it’s not all disappointing either.. Special mention for the Tormentor, a real ruthless executioner who will not hesitate to make you eat the dust. And also at Filobscure, this new doctrine that adds a fun touch to the gameplay. Alas, it is far too insufficient to make me like this extension.

History, the sinews of war

Inconsistency is the word that immediately comes to mind after finishing the Eclipse main quests. While the beginning was rather catchy, the sequel is much less so.

After a spectacular space battle in the combat phases, in the infiltration and in the special effects, we are projected on the planet Neptune. ¿Why? Buena pregunta… Calus, Emperor of the Cabal, and his fleet are going, so are we. Al llegar in the city of a thousand neons: Néomuna and let’s meet Nimbus and Rohan. To save the Traveler and defeat the Witness, our hope rests on “the Veil” that Calus is trying to seize. I put quotes because we don’t really know what it is, or why it becomes an object of desire, but hey, it’s our goal, so once again, here we go!

We don’t know much about the Neomunians, there are quite a few buildings open to players, and surprisingly, there are few missions in this city (most of them take place elsewhere). So why are we on Néomuna to stay there so little? The city, although very pretty, is quite closed. Apart from our two great local acolytes who accompany us, we are left to our own devices. Speaking of NPCs, the case of Nimbus is problematic. He quickly becomes unbearable. Indeed, he has a rather confusing humor that is completely out of step with the sword of Damocles hovering above us. Making fun of a tragic condition for his people is perhaps not the most ingenious idea one can have. The writing around the latter is particular and disappointing, especially when you know what the studio is capable of doing in the matter. Another annoying point: the presence of Osiris. Being quite solitary and stubborn, he operates as he sees fit. So, we are embarked on an adventure with on one side, a humanoid-comedian and on the other, an unsympathetic guardian. The more I advanced, the less I wanted to continue. To conclude in incoherence, the “end” of the story brings us nothing, really nothing. We still do not know what the Veil is, we are plunged into the unknown. Concretely, there is no end, just more goals.

Be one with the thread

The Eclipse extension brings with it a new doctrine: the Dark Thread. After a few missions, we take control of it and in the end, it is omnipresent, even too present in the main story. I lament it lack of epic moments in favor of moments centered on this power, because it quickly becomes redundant and we lose track of it! But we must recognize that it adds a new dynamism to the gameplay. Some mechanics are very interesting and I think that for seasoned players, it will be a real plus for them. And even for new players, the dark thread stands out from other civics thanks to its originality and modernity. In the space of a few phone calls, our guardian turns into Spiderman. Like the “Beyond Light” DLC, the addition of a new way of playing brings freshnessand it is rather a good escogió.

The Tormentor, la buena sorpresa

New enemies and their abilities are a highlight of Calus’ fleet. The Tormentor is a great success both in its character-design and in its concept. It appears repeatedly and at crucial moments. With his giant scythe, he becomes very effective at long range, he sends guided shots directly at us. But he can also be very formidable in melee when he grabs you, which takes away most of your life. When you face him, you become his prey and he doesn’t let go of you. My only advice? Run, move and stay away from him! I had some difculty against him but if you play in co-op, it should be fine…provided you have good teammates.
Also, I didn’t really get the point of the shield the Cabal left behind when they died. A novelty that is not very useful for our opponents as the protection granted to them is too minimal.

One for all, and all for the Traveler

The final mission, which acts as a confrontation against Calus and his army, is also a success overall. I found it good rhythmic and epic. An almost endless battle, where bullets rain down and shells fall! Our allies are valiant and give everything they can, we feel this feeling of last chance, of last strength to save the Veil, the Voyager and the whole coalition. But, I must admit that the ultimate fight against Calus leaves me on my hunger. He wasn’t as powerful as he looked. His attacks, mostly ranged at first, were easily avoidable. Regarding his life points, he had a lot of them but they went away relatively quickly. He was like a huge punching bag, which was exhausted from being touched. I even had more difficulty when the two Tormentors appeared during the fight than the rest of the encounter with the Cabal Emperor. As a whole, this last quest ends the Eclipse expansion in a beautiful way, which is however far from perfect.
