Tears of the Kingdom makes Hyrule look better than ever with a much improved draw distance compared to its predecessor.
In 2017, Breath of the Wild reinvented the familiar Zelda formula, giving players a huge open world to explore, without unlimited quests or a map full of points of interest. Instead, he gave you the freedom to go your own way. You could spend hours venturing outside to see what’s on the horizon, sometimes hoping to uncover a secret, and sometimes just for fun. And thanks to a greatly improved draw distance, distant locations in Tears of the Kingdom will be even more appealing.
Footage shared on the Tears of the Kingdom subreddit shows how you can see more clearly at a greater distance in the upcoming game compared to its predecessor. Not only that, but the lighting effects make Hyrule even more majestic.

Naturally, any sequel, even on the same console, tends to be more visually impressive as developers become familiar with the hardware and improve its capabilities. Still, the improvement in Link’s next adventure is more than that, as Breath of the Wild was originally made for the Wii U and has essentially been ported to the Switch. Tears of the Kingdom, on the other hand, was made for the Switch and can take full advantage of the increased processing power of Nintendo’s newest console.
Tears of the Kingdom will be released on May 12. Last week we saw some new gameplay footage during the first Nintendo Direct livestream of the year. While it’s certainly shaping up to be a worthy Breath of the Wild successor, at $70 it’s also Nintendo’s most expensive Switch game to date.
