It’s not long, or at least not that long, until Starfield’s release date, but the finer details of Bethesda’s upcoming RPG remain under wraps. With the Starfield showcase scheduled for June 11, we hope to see a lot more of the developers’ space odyssey from Fallout and Skyrim in the near future. For now though, based on a recently released age rating, it looks like Starfield includes some pretty strong elements, from drug use to violence to nudity, but apparently no sex.
Starfield would feature “high impact” violence, “very light impact” nudity, and “soft” language. That’s according to the Australian Board of Classification, which gives Starfield an “18+” rating, the most restrictive outside of adult films.
The 18+ rating is apparently due to Starfield’s “high impact” drug use, with a separate note from the Classification Committee alleging that Starfield exhibits “interactive” drug use.
Starfield will also include tracks with “moderate” impact, but no sex. You can see the full rating from the Australian Classification Board, with a gray mark certifying Starfield’s lack of sex, below:
As for interactive drug use, fans of Fallout and Skyrim will be familiar with in-game elements like Jet, Psycho, and Skooma, in-universe narcotics that provide temporary boosts to a character’s stats, but risk creating the “addicted”. buff, creating a long term detrimental effect on the game. Starfield may include a similar style of in-game consumables.
However, the Australian Classification Board’s rating for Fallout 4 describes only “moderate” drug use, while Skyrim’s rating indicates no drug use at all, possibly indicating a more complex system. Open to Starfield.
Conversely, Skyrim is rated for light sexual content; Fallout 4 gets the most sexually explicit rating of moderate. While both games contain romance and relationship options, neither features an explicit sex scene, so perhaps Starfield is even more understated. However, The Witcher 3 RPG is unlikely to be limited to Australia for its “high impact” depictions of intimacy.
