Imagine a PS5 controller that gets hot or cold in gamers’ hands based on certain objects they interact with in a game. That’s the concept Sony has been toying with for at least a decade, and according to a new patent filing, it’s still the case.
Could a PS5 controller that alters the temperature become reality?
We are firmly in the “never say never” camp, but patents almost never materialize. However, it’s interesting to see that Sony is still toying with an idea that first surfaced in 2012.
At the time, Sony filed a patent that would make the PS3 Move motion controller (remember that?) hot or cold depending on what’s going on in-game. Now, a recently released patent, spotted by Exputer, suggests Sony tweaked their brainchild.
The new patent discusses a controller containing a deformable elastic sensor that “detects the user’s touch or deformation action of the elastic member and outputs an electrical signal based on the detected contact or deformation action in question”.
The controller would use flexible gel-like materials to “enrich haptic experiences”. So imagine you pick up a block of ice in a game for some reason, and the controller triggers a response that makes it feel a little cold to the touch.
