Upon starting the game, players will be given the option to choose a difficulty level. There are 4 difficulty levels available, Peaceful, Normal, Hard and Custom. The difficulty level of a saved game cannot be changed, so choose wisely.

Peaceful difficulty

Sons of the Forest’s Pacific Mode aims to allow players to explore the game’s story, with far fewer enemy encounters. It emphasizes exploration, crafting, and survival more than combat, making it perfect for players just starting out with their first survival horror game or players who are much more interested in the plot of the game.

Normal difficulty

A perfect balance between Peaceful and Hard, Normal mode will challenge players to fight for survival, while giving them a reasonable break to find their way. More enemies will appear and try to chase the player, but it’s nothing too crazy. Players will also have access to a decent amount of resources to fend off cannibals and mutants on the island, making the difficulty level manageable for the average player.

Difficulty Hard

Not for the faint-hearted, Hard mode increases the difficulty level considerably. Not only are your resources limited, but enemies will spawn more often and deal more damage. This difficulty level is truly a battle to survive, as you will have to rely on your wits and your surroundings to overcome the many attacks. This is the perfect mode for seasoned veterans or players looking for a challenge.

custom difficulty

For players who want to tweak the difficulty to their liking, Custom Difficulty will allow them to change various settings that affect the overall difficulty of the game. This includes but is not limited to resource spawn rates, enemy stats and starvation rate. This is a great option for players who want a middle ground between the game’s existing difficulty modes.
