One of the basic items you will need in Sons of the Forest is shelter. Of course, you will not only be hosted. The game’s improved building mechanics make it easier than ever to create a base that looks the way you want. This guide will show you how the building system works in Sons of the Forest.
How building works in Sons of the Forest
Construction can be both simple and complex depending on how you approach it. Before you start building a base, you should familiarize yourself with some of the base building pieces you can create. Begin by opening your guide by pressing the B key.

The guide is used to remind you how to build various structures, such as wooden walls or a beautiful staircase. The standard build mode lets you place logs to really create your own foundation. The other mode of construction makes it possible to produce preformed structures simply by adding materials to them. To change build mode, hold down the X key while holding the book.

With the book on the left side of the screen, you’ll see various pre-made structures like basic log cabins and tree platforms. Use the left mouse button to select the structure you want to build and an outline will appear in front of you. Select where you want to place the item. Once done, bring the necessary materials to the structure and press the E key to place the materials on it.

When using the freeflow building style, you will see several prompts that allow you to place logs, sticks, and stones in various locations. When holding a log, you can look at the ground to see where you can place the log and which direction it will go. After placing a log, you can connect other logs to create things like walls and floors. The same method can be used with sticks to craft items like fires.

By holding your axe, you can perform various cuts on logs and sticks to create new structures and objects. Look at a log while holding your ax to see the different cutting locations. When you find a spot you like, press the left mouse button to hit the log and cut it. Cutting the logs in half will allow you to make floors and stairs.
