The Sons of the Forest team lays out some of their update plans for the survival horror game while answering questions from the community, and it looks like there are plenty of welcome additions in the works. Since its release via Steam Early Access, player numbers for Sons of the Forest have shown just how strong demand is for the cannibal-infested sequel, and there are plenty more to come for fans.

The Sons of the Forest Discord hosted a Q&A with the Endnight Games dev team and had a lot of questions to ask. While the team is obviously reluctant to reveal any future plans, stressing, “We don’t want to promise features that may not ship,” it gave us some glimpses of what to expect in the months to come. come.

Companion buffs are first on the cards – Kelvin and Virginia in Sons of the Forest are already useful, but there’s more to come. The team is working on other possible tasks for Kelvin, including “getting him to help build a wall around his base, or fortify/repair the base if necessary.” As for Virginia, the team wants her to have “more bravery if she has a gun, and also based on how many mutants and cannibals she has killed.”

Endnight wants these mutants and cannibals from Sons of the Forest to have more personality too. It provides “more environmental actions for the cannibals to do in their villages”, as well as “more types of structures they can live in to give more variety to the different camps”. There’s “at least one character (enemy) that wasn’t ready for first outing” in the works and the potential for more “including variations on some of the current enemies.”

Dedicated servers are a much-discussed topic, with Endnight saying, “It’s something we’re working on in the background, but we don’t have an exact date yet.” As for tools to deal with the bereaved, the team admits: “It’s always very tricky, our hope as developers is that people are nice to each other, but unfortunately that’s not what happens.” He adds that the team is exploring options to help limit the risk of bereavement in the future.

A common complaint is the power of Sons of the Forest’s GPS locator: with its ability to immediately locate the entire story, some players worry that it will interfere with the game’s natural pacing. It’s a problem and some players are running to the end instead of living/existing in the world,” says Endnight, “We have a lot of internal ideas but we don’t have a perfect solution yet.”

The community is asking about the possibility of faster transport tools and Endnight says, “We have what we think is a great idea for that.” However, he says he’s wary of revealing more details at this time “in case it’s not as fun as we thought, or it doesn’t work well with the environment.”

However, what about ball sleds? The much-loved tool from The Forest isn’t currently part of its sequel, but it looks like a return could be on the cards. “That’s one of the coolest things about Early Access,” says Endnight, “Internally we didn’t know how much people liked the Log Sled and because of how many bugs it had. had in the first game, we weren’t sure if it was worth putting it back on or not, but there’s no denying that it’s something that players miss.

Other improvements discussed in the interview included expanded crafting, new build options and shadow blueprints, and “a more advanced cooking system” which the team says is currently in prototype stage and ” will probably happen soon”. a future fix. As for the potential for more wildlife, the team says “we currently have no plans to add bears or wolves.” (which were mentioned in the question) but possibly other animals.
