Paramount Pictures and Sega continue to expand the Sonic the Hedgehog universe in film and television.

Although Sonic the Hedgehog 2 won’t air until next spring, a third cinematic installment in the franchise is officially in development, as is the first-ever live-action original Sonic series slated for 2023. It will feature the character of Knuckles, of which Idris Elba will take over the voice. As a reminder, the first film Sonic the Hedgehog broke numerous records, including becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time when it hit theaters, grossing nearly $320 million at the global box office.

The world of Sonic the Hedgehog has captured the imagination for decades, and we’re excited to push the boundaries of what this franchise is capable of with world-class offerings both on the big screen and for Sonic fans at home.“said producer Neal H. Moritz. “The sky really is the limit, and I’m immensely proud to be a part of creating new Sonic content for long-time fans, as well as introducing Sonic to a new generation.“. Brian Robbins, CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon as well as Director of Films, Kids and Family Content for Paramount+, added: “For more than three decades, the Sonic the Hedgehog universe of unique and dynamic characters has generated one of the most passionate fanbases. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Sega, Neal Moritz, and all of our creative partners, as we explore additional approaches to fully scale the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise across all platforms and captivate its loyal audience worldwide.
