Over the years, Shigeru Miyamoto has been described as a developer who isn’t interested in making stories a central part of his games. Some have gone further and think it’s openly against them.

Mario, the most well-known franchise created by Miyamoto, has generally focused on gameplay and the plot is almost non-existent. Even with a franchise like The Legend of Zelda, the story hasn’t been the focus.

In an interview with IGN, Miyamoto was able to clarify his position. He mentioned that it’s about making complex storylines unnecessary, but another aspect is “focusing on a gameplay experience that makes you try things over and over again.”

Miyamoto said:

“It’s not that complex stories aren’t necessary, that’s not what I’m saying at all. Story is one way of explaining a game. I think story is just another way to enjoy that experience. Another is to focus on a gameplay experience that makes you try things over and over. As I mentioned, the story is a way to explain the game, and when that happens. goes well, sometimes people choose to start with the story. For me, the initial story is how to make the game fun, and that’s how I start thinking and making a game. Again, it’s not that the story is useless, it’s just the way I make games.”
