Various rumors about the console ps6 The Mark Cerny-led design has been making the rounds for the past two weeks. Most of these rumors stem from a new Cerny patent outlining a method to speed up ray tracing on a PS5, though further analysis suggests it could be for the PS6.

This PS6 console rumor is, at the very least, an educated guess

Several users on Twitter shared rumors that Cerny is hard at work on the PS6. PS6 countdown says in a row that Cerny is hard at work on the PlayStation brand, which is “probably the PS6”, while another user he says he heard more or less the same thing from a reliable source. That being said, we recommend taking these rumors with a grain of salt.

A more substantial inference comes from the Digital Foundry “dictator” at Resetera, who clarifies that Cerny’s patent is not based on PS5 hardware. He writes that the patent has “an RT player like Intel or NV that PS5 and AMD don’t have on any released hardware. It’s probably for a future iteration of PlayStation.” This “iteration” could refer to a PS6 or perhaps a PS5 Pro/Slim.

Even if this rumor turns out to be nonsense, it makes sense. Cerny was the lead system architect for PS4, PlayStation Vita, and PS5, so giving him a starring role on the PS6 wouldn’t be all that surprising.

The PS6 release date will be after 2027, according to Sony’s documents. The Last of Us 3 is also rumored to have “PlayStation 6 in mind”.
