In the original Resident Evil 4, Ashley often felt like a simple and slightly inhuman game mechanic, with Leon Kennedy constantly barking “wait” and “follow me” and instant play if he even took a single stray bullet. With the Resident Evil 4 Remake release date fast approaching, the new RE4 gameplay shows off a vastly improved dynamic and system between Leon and Ashley, helping Capcom’s horror game feel more alive than ever.

As we saw in our new Resident Evil 4 preview, first of all, Leon and Ashley now talk during gameplay. She’s not just a silent robotic resource that you have to deal with; she feels like a true companion, gasping in fear, reacting to the Ganados and talking to Leon about what they should do next.

If you remember Ellie in The Last of Us and how she reacted dynamically to what Joel and the player were doing, Leon and Ashley’s relationship now feels like it was forged by the game rather than just cutscenes.

Second, Ashley now reacts much more naturally in firefights and battles. In the original Resident Evil 4, telling her to “wait” meant she was just standing there, waiting for your next command, even though she was surrounded by a swarm of Ganados. Now Leon can tell Ashley to stay close or “give her some space”, which will get her out of the skirmish to take cover.

From what we’ve seen, in the new gameplay footage provided to – Game News, Ashley makes a much more human effort to avoid danger. Simply put, he behaves a lot more like a person and feels like an authentic part of the whole Resident Evil 4 experience, not just a non-stop mechanical escort quest that sometimes talks during cutscenes.

You’ll want all of the Resident Evil 4 system requirements ready for launch day, or maybe some of the best survival games to help you out in the meantime.
