I’m here to tell you that you haven’t seen anything always. Because Resident Evil 4 Remake has a hidden extreme difficulty setting that cranks up the horror to the max. It’s called “Crazy Chainsaw Mode” and it’s brutal. I tried it myself, and didn’t even get out of the first encounter on my first try, and apparently there are no checkpoints either, so it’s back to the start if you want to try again.
Resident Evil 4 Remake Demo: Mad Chainsaw Mode Difficulty
Unlocking RE4 Remake’s harder difficulty setting is simple, if a little hit or miss. When you click on the “new game” option in the menu, there is a small random chance that you will be given the option to play Mad Chainsaw mode on extreme difficulty.
We’ve seen all kinds of stories about how quickly it appeared, with some people claiming to have seen it on their first try. I counted, and it took me 16 reboots in total (after already clearing the demo once) for the configuration to be offered to me. If you don’t feel up to the challenge, you can decline the offer, but why not give it a try and see how it goes?
Resident Evil 4 Remake Demo Mad Chainsaw Mode Differences and Restrictions
Capcom lists the following notes on the Mad Chainsaw mode:
- Mad Chainsaw mode will only apply to this one match.
- You must wait for Mad Chainsaw mode to restart for further attempts.
- This mode is specific to the demo and not included in the final game.
As for how the gameplay differs in the game, that’s definitely a big step forward. Enemy attacks will take away about half of your total health bar in one hit, but that’s only a minor inconvenience. The real challenge comes from the number and resilience of your enemies. For example, the first enemy you encounter in the basement is now backed up by two additional friends, and they all shoot straight at you, even brushing off direct headshots as if they were nothing.
I managed to take one down, but even my first aid spray wasn’t enough to keep me alive long enough to get out of the basement.
