Showgunners will be out in just over a month. The strategy game set in a dystopian future is developed by a team of people of great merit in the genre.

Artificer, a studio made up largely of the co-creators of games like Hard West and Phantom Doctrine, is working on an interesting game. Futuristic turn-based strategy Gunners will be released on May 2. Due to the creative approach to the game, we decided to bring the title to a wider audience of gamers. Maybe it will encourage some XCOM fans to play.

Bloody entertainment from a dystopian future

In a dystopian future, the world is held in the iron grip of mega-corporations. One of the main forms of entertainment in this gruesome reality are brutal reality shows, in which daredevils compete in the hopes of gaining fortune and publicity.. Contestants face off in arenas riddled with deadly traps, while crowds of heavily armed mercenaries have plans for the contestants’ lives.

The game’s protagonist, Scarlett Hammer, under the guise of participating in the bloody games, will seek an opportunity for personal revenge.

While the motif of murderous games played to the delight of crowds is nothing new in popular culture (certain popular novel series come to mind, for example The Hunger Games or the iconic Escape from New York by John Carpenter), the grungy cyberpunk aesthetic of a city shrouded in darkness seems to fit well with the promotional material put together by the studio.

One can only hope that the developers make good use of the narrative potential of the story concept they have chosen.

Gameplay in Showgunners

The expertise of the developers, inherited from the days of CreativeForge Games, is very evident in the context of the game itself. Gunners is actually a classic isometric turn-based strategy game.

Based on the game demo and pre-launch promotional material, we can guess the gameplay elements present in the game:

  1. Artificer gameplay will feature the ability to hide behind cover and other terrain features, which is standard for the genre;
  2. the possibility of hitting an opponent will be represented by a percentage indicator, which will be influenced, among other things, by the distance to the target, the possible obstacles in the way or, finally, the weapon and the special ability used by the character;
  3. In addition to the main character, the player’s party will also include other characters. These must differ from each other in the range of skills available or preferred fighting style;
  4. Among the minor elements to mention are the traps with which the arenas will be filled, the presence of projectiles and explosive weapons, and finally, the layout of the map itself, full of obstacles, rooms and environmental dangers.
