While PS5 console sales in the United States saw growth in January 2023, with “other platforms” including Xbox seeing declines, according to the latest figures from NPD. Mat Piscatella, CEO of The NPD Group, released data on US consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories for the month. Year over year, hardware spending was flat at $393 million, while content and accessories spending fell, driving an overall 5% drop in sales.

PS5 Dualsense was the top-selling accessory in the US in January 2023

While Piscatella didn’t have specific numbers on how each platform’s sales rose or fell, he shared on Blood:

Growth in PlayStation 5 and Switch hardware spending was offset by declines on other platforms.

He keeps on in another tweet: “PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in the US market in January 2023, in units and dollars, with Switch ranked second in both measures.”

A 14% drop in accessory spending was primarily due to consumers choosing not to spend on gamepads, despite the PS5 Dualsense Midnight Black controller being the top-selling accessory of the month in terms of dollar sales.

The NDP report also corroborates the PS Store download charts for January 2023, with Dead Space in second place for the month and Forspoken in seventh.

Unsurprisingly, Modern Warfare 2 sits at the top of the pile. Two new Top 20 entries include Fire Emblem Engage at number five and One Piece Odyssey at number nine. One caveat for the chart, however, is that Nintendo oddly doesn’t share digital sales.
