Waiting for the prologue release date? If you’re a PUBG: Battlegrounds fan and keep tabs on PlayerUnknown himself, chances are you’re desperate to find out what Brendan Greene is up to. Well, you are not alone.

From what we’ve seen and heard so far, it looks like Greene will be abandoning his battle royale roots to lay the groundwork for new, innovative open-world games. Prologue is, at its core, a paid tech demo that will feature a massive open world for you to explore at your own pace. But what it means is much, much more, especially if your team can pull it off.

Speculation on the release date of the prologue

When will the Prologue be released? Well the honest answer is We still do not know the release date of Prologue. When it was announced in 2019, a website was created asking fans to save their email addresses for future updates. Three years later, that website is still live and the email still states that “the game still has a little time before we’re ready to share more.”

We know that PlayerUnknown Productions is still working on Prologue because Greene has spoken several times about what proof-of-concept work is for Project Artemis, their ambitious attempt to create a planet-sized open world in which players can create their own destiny.

However, no one knows when it will arrive. With PlayerUnknown Projects regularly releasing development updates on Artemis, something clearly not ready to ship, it’s unlikely we’ll see Prologue released in 2023.

prologue trailer

The only Prologue trailer we have is the trailer that showed at The Game Awards in 2019. It shows a forest covered in ferns, broken trees, and rocks, battered by wind and rain. Within seconds, it turns to thunder and lightning, and the camera, which represents one person’s point of view, moves erratically as dogs begin to bark in the background.

It doesn’t offer us much, but it fits Greene’s description of the game: a single-player adventure that requires players to survive long enough in the wilderness to find a route to the nearest airfield.

foreword

Yet Prologue remains shrouded in mystery. We know this is part of Project Artemis, an incredibly ambitious project, and we know that the main objective of the game is to survive in the wild. But what other information can we glean from the Internet and the few interviews Greene has done?

First of all, we know that the world will be 64×64 km and have a realistic weather system. The map will be generated with each new game and you will be given a location to find and tools to survive. Second, PlayerUnknown admitted that the game can be a bit “boring” in an interview with GamesBeat. He admits that starting a fire, closing the windows and staying warm isn’t for everyone and that Prologue is being built as a test bed for something much, much bigger.

This desire to create a gigantic world comes from playing games like DayZ, where the edges of the map often limited your gameplay. He wants to create a world where vehicles have a real impact on the game and where finding another player’s base takes time, rather than mere seconds. In short, you want to create something where your actions have consequences and Prologue will allow that.

It’s unclear how many of these ambitions will be in Prologue, but given what PlayerUnknown’s Productions is trying to achieve here, it would be surprising not to discover some of these little nuggets. We also know that the studio is not dependent on the commercial success of Prologue. In the same interview, Greene notes that the team already has funding for Artemis, so they have “a chance to show up and get people in a lot sooner”.

Beyond that, Prologue’s release date remains a mystery. We’re still waiting to hear more about the game, but while you’re waiting for more, why not check out our guide to the best survival games?
