In October last year, we witnessed the long-awaited launch of Bayonet 3, the third title in the Platinum Games franchise coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch. It is well known that Bayonetta is a niche series but Platinum Games has just announced that Bayonetta 3 has already sold over one million units on Nintendo Switch.

Last Valentine’s Day, the official Platinum Games social media account broke the good news to Bayonetta fans by announcing that Bayonetta 3 has already entered the list of Nintendo Switch video games that have sold more than one million units. Recall that Bayonetta 3 is a Nintendo Switch exclusive that will not reach other consoles or PCs.

No doubt Platinum Games must be happy that Bayonetta 3 has reached its first million units sold, because at the end of last year its creator, Hideki Kamiya, said that the Bayonetta series could have up to 9 games. In fact, what Kamiya said was that “I don’t imagine the Bayonetta series will ever end“, so we will continue to see deliveries from the witch as long as they continue to be sold.

I want to make Bayonetta 4 and Bayonetta 5, and I intend to present them to the company. We often talked internally about how we could do nine (Bayonetta games)“, was what Hideki Kamiya said at the time. Although some players were disappointed with the ending of Bayonetta 3, Hideki Kamiya assured that he loved the character and “I won’t do anything that betrays the player”.

The first Bayonetta title is available on all modern platforms, but Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3 can only be played on Nintendo Switch (or Nintendo Wii U in the case of Bayonetta 2). Although some fans aren’t happy with this, Hideki Kamiya says he owes Nintendo an eternal debt for saving the franchise.
