Payday 3 should get a release in 2023

Now that it has been completely quiet around Payday 3 for around half a year, there is finally positive news about the upcoming co-op shooter.

The publisher Starbreeze announced on March 19, 2020 that it had signed a co-publishing contract with Koch Media. This should secure the release of the game, which in the meantime almost had to be discontinued due to financial problems.

A date for the publication is a long way off: According to Starbreeze, there is a Release of Payday 3 in 2023 most likely.

50 million euros for Payday 3

The German publisher Koch Media, which is responsible for the distribution of numerous large and small game titles (most recently about Hitman 3), will support Starbreeze Studios with Payday 3 with 50 million euros.

The money should flow into three different areas:

  • The development costs up to the release
  • International Marketing
  • Additional game content for at least 18 months after release

The co-publishing agreement is the first major coup for Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren, who took over the management of the company last October. He commented on the deal as follows:

“In addition to securing further development, this deal secures the worldwide release of Payday 3 as well as marketing efforts throughout the game’s lifecycle. We now have a solid foundation for a successful launch of Payday 3.”

Starbreeze in crisis

In the past few years, Starbreeze made mostly negative headlines: The publisher had to contend with massive financial difficulties after flopped games like Raid: World War II and Overkill’s The Walking Dead.

At the end of 2018, the Starbreeze offices were raided because the company management was accused of insider trading: parts of the management sold shares worth several million euros just before the share price rose from 60 cents to 1 cent after the financial problems were announced crashed.

With the release of Payday 3, Starbreeze Studios want to build on successful times in the future. The financial injection from Koch Media should certainly be of great help.
