The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s $70 price tag will no longer be standard for Nintendo games in the future.

Tears of the Kingdom pre-orders went live yesterday, February 8, following a new Nintendo Direct with a trailer showcasing the new game. Shortly after, Nintendo confirmed to Game Informer (opens in a new tab) that Tears of the Kingdom’s $70 price tag would not be reflected in all Nintendo games going forward.

Nintendo pointed out to Game Informer that title pricing is determined on a “case-by-case” basis. The publisher confirmed this twice at the point of sale, actually adding a simple “no” when asked if the $70 price tag would be the trend for Nintendo-developed games in the future.

This will surely bring relief to Nintendo consumers around the world. PlayStation took the first step towards the $70 price for first-party games in 2020 with games like Demon’s Souls, and Xbox announced late last year that its first-party games in 2023 would be priced at $70, including Starfield.

While that seems to be the norm for PlayStation and Xbox exclusive games, it won’t be the norm for Nintendo games. That’s if the company’s new statement holds up: There’s nothing to say that Nintendo can’t just figure out the vast majority of its games are worth $70 and raise the price accordingly.

For now though, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be Nintendo’s first foray into the $70 price tag. Considering Breath of the Wild is one of the best-selling Nintendo Switch games of all time, and the sequel has a frenetic level of anticipation, there’s plenty to indicate that fans won’t necessarily be put off by the price. .
