According to various rumors, it seems that the next Nintendo Switch will not be able to be backward compatible with older games.

For the past few weeks, rumors about a new version of the Nintendo Switch, more advanced from a technical point of view, have been getting more and more insistent. According to the latter, this new iteration could be announced this year, for a possible launch at the end of the year.. But at the moment, for the moment, we haven’t really heard about the technical capabilities of this new console, except that it should be more powerful, to better meet current graphics standards.

A new Nintendo Switch that is not backward compatible with the previous one?

However, according to NightDive studio content creator and developer called ModernVintageGamer (MVG), Nintendo’s next console is unlikely to be backward compatible. As a reminder, the Switch uses a Tegra X1 chip, developed by Nvidia. According to MVG, “ If Nintendo changes the chip, which is highly likely, most current Nintendo Switch games won’t work on a new type of hardware.“. The developer then discusses some potential solutions that Nintendo can employ to circumvent this problem: the company can for example use emulation, much like the case with the Xbox Series X / S consoles.

Remember that the Xbox Series uses its technical power to emulate Xbox and Xbox 360 games, in the same way that other emulators work on PC, for example. Nintendo could potentially use a similar process, but it would require considerable technical power.. In other words, if Nintendo ends up swapping out its Tegra X1 chip for a more powerful one, chances are the next console won’t be backward compatible at all with Nintendo Switch’s huge backlog.
