Last night the folks at Capcom released their Resident Evil 4 Remake demo, and we did what all wise men would do: download it immediately and play it in the wee hours of the morning.

Luckily (for our sleep schedule anyway), this Resi 4 demo game is short, with our playtime at just 15 minutes for our first run. However, to be honest, we probably would have played it for hours because this part of Resident Evil 4 is enjoyable to play and left us wanting much, much more.

As the name of the demo suggests, you get access to a few early sections of RE4 here, up to the point where the Chainsaw Boi starts chasing you around the opening area of the city like a mad maniac. The reworked shooter shows up almost immediately, which feels like an evolved version of what Capcom cooked up with the Resident Evil 2 remake.

The combat is heavy and satisfying, and even the intro gun feels nice and punchy right off the bat. You won’t be solving a lot of puzzles or anything like that here – this demo quickly demonstrates the more action-oriented nature of RE4.

We will add here the caveat that this writer never properly I played the original Resident Evil 4 – the game’s village intro area is as far as I personally got with the previous version. Still, if this remake continues to go in the same direction as the demo, it will stand on its own as a fantastic third-person survival horror title, even without any fans of the original game.

A quick note on performance, at least for this opening section: the game looks and runs incredibly well on Xbox Series X in our experience (VRR enabled). We chose to “prioritize frame rate” with ray tracing alight, and I didn’t notice any obvious 60fps drop. We’ve heard various reports about other systems, but the new version of Resi 4 seems to be well optimized for Series X so far.

Well that’s all! Like we say, this is a very short demo, but it’s worth downloading if you’re interested in the Resident Evil 4 remake. Newcomers and fans of the original, we should be thrilled when launching the full game. March 24.
