Soon, Neeko and Rell will see their chosen League of Legends champions tweaked, updated, and transformed, as Riot Games confirms that Curious Chameleon and Iron Maiden are next in line for mid-range upgrades. While League of Legends recently brought Yuumi overhauls, the MOBA game creators are now ready to focus on our favorite metalancer and revisit Rell’s mounted and unmounted abilities.
Although not on our League of Legends tier list, with a little love, Rell could be a terrific bot support. Her Ferromancy: Crash Down ability might leave her a little exposed right now, and her Attract and Repel seems a little limited. Luckily, Riot plans to change all that in Rell’s next midrange update.
“We think Rell has an exciting fantasy and style of play around swapping between mounted and unmounted forms,” says Stephen ‘Riot Rapter’ Auker, Rell’s midscope designer. “While she’s a solid champion, she feels too grounded when she misses W. She also doesn’t live up to expectations of what a mounted lancer could do. That means he hasn’t fully captured the audience that might have been interested.
“The design team had tried a Rell mitoscope before, but nothing really stuck except for their new E. That’s right, Rell gets a brand new E which was inspired by one of Rell’s original designer’s early scans.” Riot shares some additional details in its latest dev diary:
Along with giving it a new E, Auker outlines a three-point plan for Rell’s next midscope:
“Lean into the mounted/unmounted fantasy: Let Rell feel fast, like she can charge enemies on horseback, and let her feel like a fearsome fighter on foot.
“Increase game pattern variation: Give Rell more options in lanes and teamfights besides landing W, and make sure that while she’s down there are useful things she can do.
“Solve some quality of life issues: We’ve heard your feedback on some of the most frustrating parts of Rell’s kit, so we wanted to help alleviate some of them. We want to mitigate things like poor room clearing, not being able to solo E, and Q having reduced potency on subsequent enemies.
Auker says Riot is still working on the final touches to Rell’s midscope and doesn’t yet have a release date in mind for its return to the Rift. However, with the Yuumi reworks completed in League of Legends patch 13.5, Riot is turning its attention to Neeko, with a mid-range also planned for the shapeshifter in the near future.
“We listened to players’ concerns and frustrations regarding Yuumi’s status, and following the decision to give her significant nerfs, we also moved her to the top of our update priority list,” says Terra. ‘Riot Yasuna’, producer of Summor Rift Team. Ray. “The trade-off was that mid-range champions like Neeko and Rell, which we announced a long time ago, haven’t reached you yet.
“Although our favorite shapeshifter has been locked in gear and art for a while, she needs a little extra time for some TLC and TLC,” Ray continues. “Neeko has long had the problem of having a lot more bugs than her fellow champions (because of the cool stuff she can do). One of our secondary goals with her is to update her tech and durability. , this way we can eliminate many of its existing bugs and more easily deal with new bugs as they appear in the future.
While Riot doesn’t have an “exact timeline” for the Rell and Neeko midscopes, they’re next on the list, with an update for Ivern that will primarily focus on Daisy. Riot says it will share more about that closer to time.
