This feathered bipedal creature was introduced with the release of the Valguero map and has since been adopted by many people for different tasks. Although not a large creature, the Deinonychus is still a valuable asset to any tribe, and in this guide we will detail how to tame the Deinonychus in Ark: Survival Evolved.
What the Deinonychus does in Ark: Survival Evolved
As mentioned, the Deinonychus isn’t a very large creature, but it’s by no means weak. This small, feathered predator is known to destroy larger creatures with ease, thanks to its long claws and herd-hunting tactics.
The Deinonychus has a special bleed mechanic, which allows it to tear through the targeted enemy and as such deal a percentile based amount of damage over time. This means that creatures with high health pools, such as Brontos, Rexes, and even Bosses, will take a large amount of damage when hit by a Deinonychus.
Deinonychus is a very territorial creature and will attack without hesitation, especially if you approach their nests. Since they are in groups and they bleed, you can be sure that if you catch him unawares, he won’t go away.
Deinonychus can also grab the side of larger creatures like a Rex or Bronto, pulling them out of the impact area of the creature’s attacks. You’ll have to find another way to attack them if they latch onto you.

What you’ll need and how to tame Deinonychus in Ark: Survival Evolved
There’s only one way to get a Deinonychus, and do it; You will have to be very fast and very mobile if you want to avoid death. To do this, you will need the following:
- a flying mount
- Good weather
The Deinonychus is like a Wyvern, Magmasaur, and Rock Drake in that you can only tame one by stealing one of its eggs. Although it may seem easy, Deinonychus in the area will attack you instantly, so you’ll need to be quick and careful.

To find the eggs you will need to head to the White Cliffs area of the Valguero map. You can also find them on the Fjordur map. There you will have to look for the red glow inside a nest; this indicates an egg waiting to be snatched.
Explore the area for wandering Deinonychus, making sure they are well away from you. Land your flying mount on or as close to the nest as possible and press the interact key to raise the egg. It’s at this point that you should instantly get back on your mount and fly before the Deinonychus returns. If the nest is near a cliff, you can remove the Deinonychus from it to make it a little easier to steal the eggs.

Once you have obtained your stolen egg, you will need to place it in an incubator or, if you have the S+ mod, the hatchery to allow it to hatch. If you don’t have one, you can install air conditioners or fires to warm the egg. Be careful because if you don’t watch the hatching bar, it might hatch without you knowing.

Once the incubation is complete, you will need to claim the baby Deinonychus to add it to your team. Deinonychus will need various items as it matures or interacts to increase its footprint. Imprinted creatures have better stats and a buff once they mature. If you have Mod S+, the Nanny will do these actions for you, in addition to feeding him. If you don’t have the S+ Mod, you need to put raw meat in his inventory until he gets older or he will starve.
