There are three main ways to get epic or higher rarity weapons in Fortnite, the first being to simply scour the island for loot and chests while looking for purple (epic), orange (legendary), or golden (mythical). However, they all have particularly low spawn chances, so unless you’re very lucky, you might hunt for a long time without a reward.

The second option is to take down the Fortnite Highcard boss that spawns in Brutal Bastion, Shattered Slabs, and Mega City every match, as they drop a Mythic Havoc Suppressed Rifle when defeated. If you take the keycard they drop, you can also unlock one of the nearby Fortnite safes, which should contain more high-level weapons to count towards this quest.

Finally, the third and easiest way to get epic weapons in Fortnite is to visit one of the Fortnite characters that sell weapons, because the weapons they provide are always epic. There are 12 specific NPCs offering this service, whose locations we’ve marked on the map above, and each weapon costs you 250 bars.

Once you wield a weapon of epic or higher rarity, you only need to survive three storm phases with it, which are the times when the storm circle shrinks. For the best chance of success, buy an epic weapon from an NPC at the start of a match by landing nearby and interacting, then back off and dodge other players as you follow the early storm phases until you reached your goal.
