Of the many biomes you can find in Terraria, the Aether biome is unique in both looks and usefulness. This rare biome is home to pools of Shimmer, the transmutation fluid that was added in the Terraria 1.4.4 patch, also known as the Labor of Love patch. Aether can be recognized by the way it turns the blocks around it pitch black, with only a starry glow around the dark outlines of the surface, making it look like something in space. While it may seem random, there is a method to search the Aether biome in Terraria, and here’s what you need to keep in mind to find it.

How to Find Ether in Terraria
Although each seed in the world of Terraria is unique, there are certain rules about how each biome is spawned. You can take advantage of these rules to find the biomes you’re looking for, which is especially true for underground exploration.
Obviously, Aether Caves can only be found underground, and that’s what you need to be aware of. Ether is always located on the jungle biome side of your Terraria world, specifically the outer fifth of the jungle side. It is usually also found under the ocean, giving you a rough idea of direction and location. Next, let’s look at the depth, which is the trickiest part. This is because Aether can be found in the cavern layer between 100 and 2000 blocks deep, depending on the size of the spawned world. However, a good rule of thumb is to look a little above where the lava layers are starting to form.

You’ll recognize the Aether Cavern biome when the surrounding blocks start to turn black, shortly after that you’ll see a pool of Shimmer, usually in the center of the cave. Shimmer can be used to transmute items and creatures, but be careful as enemies wandering inside can turn invisible, so it’s best to be on your toes.
