One point of interest you may have come across while exploring the misty lands of Valheim is the massive ancient armor and corroded swords left behind by giants of old. Unlike the gear you equip, these colossal pieces of gear cannot be interacted with or moved. Instead, they serve as pieces of randomly generated environmental objects, similar to an abandoned hut in the meadows or a stone ruin in the Black Forest. Some adventurers may have tried to destroy these ancient pieces of armor and swords with their tools, but to no avail. The reason is that only the fourth level of spikes can pierce the old but solid metal.

Destroy ancient swords in Valheim

To destroy Ancient Swords in Valheim, you will need a Black Metal Pickaxe, the fourth pickaxe variant available for crafting. Crafting this tool requires a Forge Workstation, Black Metal ×25, and Yggdrasil Wood ×3. If you’ve already reached the Mistlands biome, you likely have a Forge in your base camp. Blackmetal is the refined form of Blackmetal Scrap Ingot, a resource dropped by the goblin-like Fulings of the Plains. Black Metal Scrap also occasionally appears in chests in Fuling villages. In contrast, Yggdrasil wood comes from the shoots of Yggdrasil, a tree that grows in the Mists.

Cutting a Yggdrasil Sprout for its Wood requires a Black Metal Axe, which is crafted by combining Fine Wood ×6, Black Metal ×20, and Linen Thread ×5 at a Forge. You can craft Flax Yarn by refining Flax on a Spinning Wheel, a workstation that requires a Crafting Table to build. Once you’ve crafted a Black Metal Axe, collect the Yggdrasil Wood needed to forge a Black Metal Pickaxe. Finally, you can travel to the ancient swords and armor you’ve found in the Mists of Valheim and destroy them for disposal.
