Outside the courtyard there is a guard named Meylan. Talk to him during the day and you’ll get a “Proof of Innocence” quest. Talk to him at night and the “guilt proof” will be activated. However, while one is as simple as bringing a person, the other involves searching for clues to get the missing Azure Sun Sword.
After talking to Meylan at night to get the quest and learning that she needs the Azure Sun Sword Proof, head south. You will see a repentant old man standing by the fence near the tavern. You’ll need someone like Osvald to scrutinize him or Hikari to bribe him. I do not recommend using Scrutinize because it is a bit high threshold. (My level 30 Osvald had a 32% chance of success at the time.)
Old Regretful is the defendant’s father. He hid the Azure Sun Sword. You’ll find it to the left of the Timberrain Inn as a hidden item. Once you get it, return to Meylan at night. Give him the sword to complete the “evidence of guilt” octopathic traveler 2 side story. You will get 12,000 leaves and a critical nut (L). This will also open the final part of the trilogy, “Trial of Justice”.
