There are plenty of puzzles to solve as you explore the highlands of Hogwarts Legacy. Some of the puzzles you will uncover are hidden deep within Treasure Vaults. Although these puzzles may be small, some of them are smartly designed and will definitely surprise you. Chess puzzles, for example, don’t have a clear direction and can take you a while. This guide will show you how to complete the Lake Marunweem chess puzzle in Hogwarts Legacy.
How to Solve the Marunweem Lake Treasure Chest Chess Puzzle in Hogwarts Legacy
Lake Marunweem is located in the southern part of the map. To reach this area, you’ll need to pass through the large goblin encampment that separates the South Seas bog from the coast of Poidsear. From there, head southeast to the lake. The Treasure Vault in question is located southeast of the fast travel point Marunweem Lake Floo Flame. The vault entrance is located next to the bandit camp.

Head to the bandit camp and clear it. Once done, go to the shop to find a cube inside a locked cage. You will need the fully updated version of Alohomora to unlock this cage. Use Wingardium Leviosa on the bucket and go down the path to the Treasure Vault entrance. Place the cube on the board on the ground and cast the Glacius spell on it. This will open the treasure chest door.

Enter the safe and you will find a chessboard with some pieces already laid out. Use Relevio to detect a vase or other type of object in the room. This item will glow blue. If the item does not appear, reload your game or return to the Marunween Lake fast travel point and return. Cast Transform on the object to turn it into a chess piece. The chess piece is random, but it will most likely be a rook or a bishop.

Use Wingardium Leviosa to move the chess piece on the board and position it to checkmate the king. For example, if you get a rook, place it directly away from the king. If you have a bishop, place it diagonally to the king. With the king in checkmate, he will collapse, revealing the treasure chest.
