Foundation is the first step you will need to complete in No Man’s Sky’s Utopia Expedition. This requires you to establish a base after initializing your expedition, but this may be easier said than done if you don’t know the game mechanics inside and out. This guide explains how to build and establish your base, so Foundation can easily tick off your roster.

How to Establish a Base for the Utopia Expedition

After starting Utopia Expedition, you will find yourself in one of the most beautiful worlds of an abandoned system. This is the world you will have to build a base in because you can’t create if you don’t. The first thing you will need to do is build a basic computer. Open the build menu, and this should be the first thing you see. Fortunately, you start this expedition with one in your inventory, so place it wherever you want. Interact with the computer and select the option to Basis of complaints so you can start building.

The next thing to do to establish a foundation is to build a structure. You can pin the milestone so you can see exactly what is needed for it. We completed the milestone by laying down four floor panels and constructing all of the walls and ceilings attached to them. You’ll need to collect carbon for this, but it’s very easy since it’s present in most of the plants around you.
We also recommend creating a save point if you can, as you’ll be able to keep any progress you make even if you die. You should probably also consider building a refiner, just one that you can place on your base. There will be a lot of building work going on in this Expedition, and having a Refiner who can work in your base while you do other things will really help.

When the milestone is recorded as completed, you can claim a prepackaged Personal Refining Unit, 200 Copper, and the Analysis Visor Blueprints from the Expedition menu. These are needed to complete more milestones, especially the refiner, as there won’t be much room for them when you’re on the go without one on your Exosuit.
