To build stone structures like houses, cobblestone paths, or stone walls in Valheim, you will need a job post called a stonemason. Similar to the stonecutter in Minecraft, this workbench is capable of turning chunks of stone into solid structures for your base, including stone arches, stone floors, and stone pillars. Additionally, you must have a Stonecutter to craft Whetstones, a material needed to craft the Grindstone upgrade for Blacksmithing. Flowerbeds are also used to build Wisp Fountains, the structures used to collect Wisp, a crucial resource for exploring the misty landscape of the Mistlands.

Unlock and build the stonemason’s recipe in Valheim

Like any higher level recipe in Valheim, you must first unlock the Stonecutter Base Structure recipe before you can build it at your base, as it is not part of the blueprints available by default. Recipes are unlocked by collecting particular resources for the first time. Likewise, the Stonemason recipe is automatically unlocked once you add a Refined Iron Bar to your inventory. Iron ingots are made in a foundry using coal and scrap metal. This raw material can only be discovered in the swamp biome.

Although you don’t need any prior equipment to enter or explore the swamp, obtaining the swamp key is essential to accessing the sunken crypts. Sunken Crypts are dungeon-like places where you’ll find Scrap to unlock the Stonecutter recipe in Valheim. To get the key to the swamp, you must summon and defeat The Elder, the boss of the Black Forest. You can summon this boss by gathering three Ancient Seeds and placing them on the Abandoned Altar. After defeating The Elder, exploring the sunken crypts of the swamp for scrap metal, and smelting the scrap metal at a foundry, you can finally craft a Stonecutter in Valheim with the following materials:

  • Madeira × 10
  • Hiero × 2
  • Piedras × 4
