Black Matter, the developer behind Hell Let Loose, is leaving the beloved WWII game to begin work on its “next project”. Fans of Steam’s multiplayer FPS shouldn’t panic though, as more Hell Let Loose updates are in the works and a new team is being assembled to oversee the 2023 roadmap.

After releasing Hell Let Loose in 2019, Black Matter has gradually updated and refined the war shooter over the past three years – our Hell Let Loose. review rates it as one of the best multiplayer shooters on Steam. Now the studio is leaving Hell Let Loose to focus on a new, but unannounced, project.

“As a team, we want to say a big thank you to the incredible support this community has given us over the years we’ve worked on Hell Let Loose,” said Max Rea, CEO of Black Matter. “Basically, Hell Let Loose took on a life of its own and is now much bigger than we could have imagined. It has been a privilege to work with you to refine it and make it what it is today.

For the time being, publisher Team17 will oversee the development and maintenance of Hell Let Loose, although a new dedicated Hell Let Loose team is apparently in the works.

“We close out the winter with a loving farewell to the Black Matter team as they prepare to move on to their next project,” says Team17. “Over the past few months we have been busy building a new Hell Let Loose studio, staffed by veteran developers who have worked on many AAA titles.

“The new team dramatically increases our development resources, allowing us to prioritize quality of life improvements across all platforms before releasing exciting new updates to the game.”

Team17 says a 2023 roadmap for Hell Let Loose will arrive in the “coming weeks” and that players can expect to see more regular updates and “clarity in our development processes”.

“The last twelve months have been bittersweet for us as a team,” says Rea. “We loved seeing our Team17 colleagues take the reins with incredible enthusiasm and attention to detail, but we’re also going to miss working on the title.

“We’re excited to join you on the battlefield now and in the future, not as developers, but ultimately as players, thrilled to know that Hell Let Loose’s best days are yet to come.”
