the setting of final fantasy 7 is the fictional world of Gaia. It is more commonly referred to in-game as simply “the planet”. Some fans even call it “Midgar”, after its most prominent location. Once upon a time though FFVII it had to take place on Earth. The official FFVII remake account dropped another bit of trivia on the development of the game in a February 11 article. The publication revealed that pre-production treatments for FFVIIThe story initially set the narrative as taking place in New York, New York, United States.

According to the publication, the story would also have been different. It does not go into details, but other features on the development and establishment of final fantasy 7 shed light on what might have been. In Matt Leone’s 2017 interview series on FFVIIAt the start of Tetsuya Nomura, he suggested that then-producer Hironobu Sakaguchi’s first treatment of the game’s plot be set in New York City, involving a character named “Detective Joe” investigating a group to destroy Mako Reactors from the city. One member of the group was a prototype of the character that would become Cloud Strife. This proto-Cloud was also written to be a “Berserker” character with a “sealed” left arm.

For his part, Sakaguchi said that the New York concept could have been linked to another project: Parasite Eve, which took place in New York and was released in 1998, a year after FFVII.

Moreover, this early treatment of final fantasy 7 the script would have incorporated “a battle against a witch”. This point was used to make way for a celebration of the 24th anniversary of Final Fantasy VIII. This game ended up using the fight against the mighty witch Edea as a major plot pivot.
