Diablo 4 is coming, and we already know what to expect from the Blizzard title (sort of). But the world of this game, Sanctuary, is a huge space for all kinds of different ways to play. Here are some suggestions, we might get rowdy!

The graveyard behind Blizzard’s headquarters is likely littered with tombstones of various ideas and prototypes we’ll never know existed. They’re the ones who haven’t made it past the design documentation phase or a few conversations with the boss. With hundreds of creative minds buzzing around the studio, all that steam has to finally find an outlet somewhere.

I’m pretty sure the Blizzard team has considered creatively expanding the world of Sanctuary more than once. Why was Diablo Immor selected?

Prequels, sequels, completely independent stories tied together simply by taking place in the same universe – all moves are allowed here. Blizzard has created an intriguing mythology, a dark world ruled by brutal laws, and the clash of hell and heaven proves to be a fantastic backdrop for human drama and tragedy., for a story in which a person finds themselves in a seemingly hopeless situation. Man – or entire kingdoms.

Such a project could happen. I talked about it once after the first delight with the Dark Souls series, so today, for the curious, the same story in a nutshell. Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro and recently Elden Ring are games that use the “high concept”. This means that all aspects (story, gameplay, graphics, music) combine to evoke specific reactions, effects and emotions in the player. It’s not only a stern kick in the ass served in a way that’s both hurtful and satisfying, but also carries bitter stories that can go to the bone.

Someone at Blizzard might think of throwing down the gauntlet of FromSoftware, and honestly, if anyone had the resources to create something to match the phenomenon, it would be Blizzard (if they really wanted to, and the company of Activision was hiding in a closet). You can always find in Sanctuary a reason and an interesting story behind the bitter and desperate crusade and slash monsters like souls! If anyone has the mass to get the feel and timing of combat just right, guaranteeing Souls-like satisfaction, it’s Blizzard. (Although in my book, Heroes of the Storm lost to League for one reason only: the feeling of “power” generated by the character’s hits and abilities, but that’s a whole different matter.)

Behind the Sanctuary there is an intriguing mythology that combines Christian and Middle Eastern motifs, where the struggle between good and evil turns out to be a closed circuit, in the middle of which we, poor ordinary men, are trapped. If the writers didn’t do everything for Marvel like they did for Diablo 3an intriguing story would be guaranteed, perhaps told more directly than in dark souls. I’m also sure Blizzard would have some cool ideas for a fun and intuitive co-op mode. And multiplayer has always been important in Diablo and Dark Souls.
