As the Destiny 2 Lightfall release date nears, Bungie is teasing the terrifying adversaries you and your fellow Guardians will face as you explore Neomuna in the space game and battle the invading forces of Calus and The Witness. Of these, he specifically warns players of the Tormentors: the elite units Bungie promises are some of the most terrifying units to grace Destiny 2 to date.

“We want the Tormentors to be the scariest unit you’ve ever fought in the Destiny universe,” says project manager Catarina Macedo, laughing. These gigantic creatures not only bring a massive scythe to battle, but also harness void energy that allows them to perform devastating attacks. However, perhaps its most intimidating tool is something Bungie hasn’t pulled out of its toolbox before.

“The Tormentor can have you,” says senior sound designer Juan Pablo Uribe, “and that’s something we’ve never done with a Boss before.” “Grab” may fail, as one brief clip shows: In one fluid motion, the Tormentor grabs a ranged Guardian with his scythe, catches them mid-air with his other hand, and binds them effortlessly with Energy.

The sound design sells the moment even more: as the Tormentor pulls you in, the background noise around you disappears, making you aware that you’re trapped and at the mercy of this fearsome enemy. “You really have this intimate moment with this terrifying creature clinging to you,” comments senior sound designer Paxson Helgesen.

Luckily, Tormentors aren’t the only important types you’ll encounter when visiting Neomuna. Acting as protectors of the city and joining forces with your Guardians to help combat the encroaching threat, the Cloudstriders are also quite large. It’s comforting to have them by your side, but it can be comforting when the towering presence of these hulking, crimson-robed figures imposes itself upon you.

Next, you’ll want to make sure you’re equipped to deal with it, so make sure you’re ready with the best Destiny 2 builds and advanced knowledge of all Destiny 2 Lightfall Exotics. We’ve also got all the details on when Destiny 2’s next Lightfall raid will be released and what to expect – don’t be surprised if you see a Tormentor or two coming your way.
