CoD: Vanguard flops – Activision blames WW2 setting

Call of Duty: Vanguard

Activision’s new game Call of Duty: Vanguard has reportedly performed well below the average of recent CoD games. Sales and player numbers of the game have not lived up to expectations by far. Vanguard is partly to blame for the franchise losing over 50 million active players this year.

The fans mainly criticized a lack of game content. The release period was not conducive to success either. Because Vanguard was released when Activision was in the middle of an abuse scandal within the company.

Activision

The company itself recognizes that mistakes were made during development. However, another aspect was identified as the main reason for the flop. In an internal report from the developer, another aspect of the title’s failure is identified instead. Accordingly, the players are simply no longer interested in World War II as a shooter setting:

“We are disappointed with Vanguard’s performance,” Activision stated in its 2021 financial report. “We are convinced that this failure is also due to our own implementation of the title, since the premium game was not as innovative as we would have liked. But we also attribute the mixed reception of the game to its setting.

The company has stated that the WW2 setting didn’t spark the same interest from players as they initially thought: “The game’s setting, World War II, didn’t sit well with some sections of our community.”

Modern Warfare 2 (2022)

In order to solve this problem, people want to rely on other settings in the future. However, there are no plans for a general course change in the series, which has been in existence for 20 years.

Instead, you put your trust in the upcoming CoD game pulling the cart out of the dirt. It is said that Modern Warfare 2 (2022) will aim to bring back and satisfy the players dissatisfied with the setting.
