As part of a new official Square Enix chrono-cross interview video about the remaster, director Masato Kato talked about the number of playable characters available in the title. During the adventure, people can eventually recruit 45 different people. However, the choices you make limit which characters can join. When discussing it, he noted that it was all about adding characters he wanted to see “on a whim”. He also “apologized” to Funguy for the way the band member was treated.

Here is Kato’s exact statement regarding the number of playable characters in chrono-cross.

Let me tell you, we originally wanted all characters in the town to be playable. As expected, this idea was rejected. Looking at him with a cool head, even I could see that was impossible. I gave up on that very quickly.

So it was just a question of “I want a character like this and like that!” I kept adding whatever I wanted on a whim, and we ended up with such a diverse cast of characters.

When I look at the character list now, if someone asked me, “Do you really need Funguy?” I would say maybe it is not necessary.

Kato also talked more about Funguy after mentioning him. As a reminder, this is the playable character who turned into a mushroom after eating an unusual one.

I’m sorry for what I did to Funguy. I should have thought about it more. I should have developed it more if I wanted to include it. He ended up being called an undesirable character. It makes me feel bad.
