Sons of the Forest is currently in Early Access as a sequel to the popular survival horror title, The Forest. Fans jump in and discover their immense admiration for the game’s two AI companions who accompany the player character throughout their gruesome stay on this savage island.

You first meet Kelvin right after a helicopter crash, and the poor guy has suffered severe damage to his ears, rendering him completely deaf. You can communicate with him through a notepad, but our emotional side just wants to hug him and tell him that everything will be fine. Similarly, you meet Virginia randomly in the woods and watch her learn to trust you if you show her that you are not a threat. What better than a hug to say that we are nice?

Kiss Kelvin and Virginia in Sons of the Forest

Unfortunately, your interactions with Kelvin and Virginia are limited in Sons of the Forest. With Kelvin, you basically get pre-determined commands that you can issue via notepad, but none of them really show any emotional attachment to the guy. He eats when you eat and drinks when you drink sometimes, but there’s no warm hug, even if you think you need one after a terrifying encounter with a mutated creature.

Virginia is in a similar boat. She’s much more reserved around you, and even when she becomes friends, she doesn’t really seem interested in a hug, although she does occasionally dance for you. You can’t command her too much, and she’ll just do whatever she wants around you, even helping you out if you equip her with a weapon or two.

The range of how players want to interact with these two characters is pretty fun. Most want to hug them, but you can also find cowardly lone survivors who murder them instead. Be careful though, because when you kill Kelvin or Virginia, they won’t come back.
